It was named for Major Gen. William Worth who had been instrumental in the negotiation of Mexico’s surrender to end the Mexican American War. Fort Worth went from a military outpost to a bustling town when it became a stop on the famous Chisholm Trail, which is well-known for the many cattle drives which originated in south Texas and continued to the railhead in Abilene, Kansas. Fort Worth began to lose its “rough edge” when prohibition closed down “Hell’s Half Acre”, the biggest group of bars, dance halls, and cat houses south of Dodge City, Kansas. Another factor contributing to the taming of Fort Worth was “Longhair Jim” Courtright who was elected as City Marshal with a mandate to curtail the Acre’s activities. His success resulted in cowboys moving their activities elsewhere and before long, businesses began to prosper and urban growth began to change the landscape of Fort Worth. As with much of Texas, after cattle, prosperity for the town came with the discovery of oil. Today, horizontal drilling technology has made natural gas reserves available, and many residents receive royalty checks for their mineral rights.
