Burleson TX History
Burleson, TX spans two counties in north central Texas, Johnson and Tarrant Counties, and is considered a suburb of Fort Worth, located just to the north. Dallas is just about 30 miles away. A rapidly developing community, the population of Burleson increased by from 20,976 in 2000 to 36,699 in 2010.
Burleson’s close proximity to Dallas and Fort Worth make it attractive as a shipping point for manufactured goods. Interstate 20 lies just north of town, and Interstate 35W and State Highway 175 intersect inside Burleson. These highways provide easy access to all major markets by truck transport. There are also two rail lines, the Union Pacific, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe that serve the town. For air transport, the Spinks General Aviation airport is just north of town and DFW International is within 45 minutes of Burleson.
The community of Burleson was named for Dr. Rufus C. Burleson the President of Baylor University at Waco and became incorporated as a town in 1912, then was made a “city” in 1938. From its early days, Burleson has been a commercial hub. In the early days, it was known for the many streams supplying the water to power steam engine locomotives, as well as the abundant wood supply in the area.
Burleson sits on the edge of rich, blacklands soil, ideal for orchards and truck farming. Because Burleson was a day’s drive from Fort Worth, the town became somewhat self-sufficient and boasted its own Post Office, newspaper, and water works.
