About Arlington Texas
Located in Tarrant County, Texas, Arlington lies between Fort Worth and Dallas. It is 12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth and 20 miles west of downtown Dallas. An estimated 2007 census put the population of Arlington at 374,417 making it the third largest municipality in the DFW Metroplex. Arlington was established in 1876 along the Texas and Pacific Railway, and grew into a prosperous cotton-ginning and farming center. It was incorporated in 1884. By 1910, the city could boast of having water, electricity, natural gas, telephone services, and a public school system. Industrialization of Arlington began on a large scale in 1954 when General Motors built an assembly plant, and the city experienced a period of major growth. Arlington has a mild climate, where July and August are the warmest months and January is the coolest. Winters are generally mild, with only a few days of icy or snowy weather. This leaves plenty of time to enjoy all types of outdoor recreation. Arlington offers every type of entertainment you may want. This is not a town that rolls up the sidewalks after dark. Arlington's children attend a school in the Arlington Independent School District (AISD), which serves more than 63,000 students. Seventeen percent of the student body is enrolled in the Gifted and Talented program. Twenty-two percent of the student body is enrolled in the Career and Technical Education Program. AISD’s International Baccalaureate World School Programme is offered at several high schools, with plans to extend it to all AISD high schools in the near future. The Advanced Placement program offers students the opportunity to graduate with 30 or more college credits, the equivalent of one full year of college study.
